What Is WTF? Word Targeting Funnel

Word Targeting Funnel (WTF) is an open Web standard, introduced by search engines. Its goal is to enable generic terms to be understood, ranked, and otherwise processed on the Web in the way that is now possible with Web Search., in short allows Web resources to define their context and meaning.

WTF indexer directives consist of two major elements: Scope and Target.
- WTF Scope: The scope of a WTF indexer directive is either a document, or parts of it.
- WTF Target: The target of a WTF indexer directive is an URI that provides context or meaning related to the document that addresses it.

Syntax For Using WTF:
WTF/1.0 standard can be implemented with various techniques, such as META elements, GET parameters, and HTTP/1.1 headers (as well as micro formats in WTF/1.1). The examples for these are as follows:

  • META Elements (HTML)
    An example of an HTML document with a WTF document context declaration:
    <meta content="document context"
    href="http://google.com/search?q=WTF"  />
  • HTTP/1.1 Headers
    To provide WTF directives in HTTP headers use an X-WTF-tag header line like in this example:
    X-WTF-Tag: Name: WTF, Content: document context,
    Href: http://google.com/search?q=WTF
  • Microformat [DRAFT]
    This section is a draft, in other words not yet normative until a consent with microformats.org is worked out. WTF directives put as microformat might look as follows:
    <p wtf-content="element context"
    wtf-href="http://google.com/search?q=WTF"> Latest
    microformat approved: Word Targeting Funnel (WTF) </p>

Additional Optimization Of WTF – WTF Subsets
The WTF standard includes various subsets. Each subset clarifies the usage of target in a particular context and provides detailled instructions for search engines.
In the following we explain the WTF subsets which are currently implemented by all major search engines. However there are more subsets (like WTFb, WTFo, WTFf  etc.)

  • WTFa - Acronyms
    The Word Targeting Funnel (a) defines a set of rules to access Web resources that provide special services with regard to acronyms, such as the Internet Slang Directory or the Acronym Finder.
  • WTFi - Instant Search
    The Word Targeting Funnel (i) defines how search engines map subsets of strings to popular search queries. For example, the fragment of a search term, like Joh, can be mapped to a complete search query like [John Doe's profile at Twitter]:
    <meta content="Joh..."  href="http://google.com/search?q=John+Doe+twitter+profile+page"  />
    or, in case another resource has reserved Joh... already, try:
    <meta content="Joh..."  href="http://google.com/search?q=John+Doe+twitter+profile+page"  />
  • WTFm - Medical Terms
    The Word Targeting Funnel (m) defines a set of rules to access Web resources that explain medical terms in layman's language.
I have taken benefit from Sebastian's Article and this WTF document while writing this post. Thank you.

Google Ranking Algorithm Update – How to take benefit:

On Saturday 21st August, 2010 Google released another important update in their ranking algorithm. After this update search queries that are more focused towards specific site/brand will get more than one search results from one site on first page! The example that was demonstrated by Google [exhibitions at amnh] contained almost 7 links from a single domain.

According to Google: “For queries that indicate a strong user interest in a particular domain we’ll now show more results from the relevant site.”

This is a very major change in Google’s Algorithm, this means that if you succeed in creating a reputable website on internet or if your services are related with your website then people searching for you are more likely to find you than your competitors, provided that you have optimized your site well.

Hence the major take away from this change is that along-with your regular SEO efforts, you should now focus on intelligent internet marketing so that users search for services along-with your domain/brand name. In this way you can capture a lot more SERPs area than before.

This update is again focused on benefiting big and renowned brands and improves their dominance on search engine results. Although this kind of update will provide user with more “related results” but it will reduce diversity in search results, which is quite as important as related information.

What do you think how this change will affect your brand and your site’s rankings in Google?

Google Wave

Introduction to Google Wave:

Google has just laucnched a new WAVE in the Social Media World and it is named "GOOGLE WAVE". Google wave is unique in the sense that it is "both a conversation and document"

  • People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.
  • A wave is shareable. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants
  • A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.

GOOGLE WAVE AS COMPARED TO OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA:

Although Google Wave is not open for public yet but after a preview at the features just intoduced by Google I think GoogleWave is much more better, interactive, fun and less-hectic than some of today's top social media tools.

I think Google Wave will be better then Twiter , since it will provide live interaction without the need of "another login" and at the same time I think Google Wave will provide a better collaboration among friends and peers than Facebook or Myspace, by allowing rich media collaboration with friends like commenting,editing etc. for various stuff you post. And one important feature is "You can also use "playback" to rewind the wave and see how it evolved." I believe it too be the most exciting and thrilling part !

I mean no offense for Twitter, Facebook or Myspace, I use them and appriciate their features, but there is always a need to combine deifferent features at one place and Google Wavepromises to provide such enviornment. I am excited about it, what's your thought ?

I have created two videos and an article on technorati to cover more details, check them out:
