How To Develop A SEO team:
Search Engine Optimization is not a single man’s job, unless you are only concerned with SEO analysis. But to put SEO best practices in action, one has to develop a sound strategy and solid team to put his knowledge in action. It is a common saying that “With Execution the best Plan is a Total Failure” and in order to execute you need to build a team, a task force dedicated and committed enough to bring results.
A typical SEO team can have a following essential job roles, although these may be confined in just 2 or 3 persons but these are some of the basic areas of focus that need to be taken care of during an SEO project.
The Hierarchy of a SEO team:
Although the above figure is self explanatory enough, I will explain each in a bit more detail.
- Production and distribution of link worthy content and seeking opportunities of ethical link building is a must for any SEO team. Whether you have in house professionals for this purpose or you outsource it to freelancers, but you must devote time to check all the process that is going on. Otherwise you may risk your efforts being spoiled by “Spammy Freelancer SEOs”. The best practice for small SEO firms can be that they can outsource large and major part of their work but should have at least one in-house professional to check the progress of freelancers.
- SEO is much more than building links, and for on-page factors, it is a bit more technical than writing an optimized content and titles. You need to have knowledge about .htacess file, url rewriting, Robots.txt, http headers etc. to name a few. It does not matter that whether you have the technical knowledge or a team member of yours, but a “tech-guy” is an integral part of SEO team.
- And like any other project Reporting and Analysis is essential for SEO, with proper reporting not only you can never satisfy your clients but also you will not be able to measure that which of your efforts bring most results. You need to record and analyze each of your efforts so that you can improve yourself later and learn from your mistakes.
So What’s the minimum number of team members for SEO project:Although that truly depends on the nature of the project, but you can safely divide the work in two basic parts i.e. (Content/links) and (Management/Technical/Reporting). Thus a total of 2 persons, if qualified enough, can make a good SEO team to get started.
However as your work load increases you will obviously need more persons in your team. But 2 is the minimum number I can think of.
So What’s your SEO management strategy and How you manage your SEO team?

This is a good post. When companies start taking SEO seriously and giving the channel it’s focus, budget, resource and recognition within the business it truly deserves, they can expect to see results. Too often, they are stuck in their boots and frightened to adopt a maverick approach coupled with an entirely different non out of the box content strategy.
From my own experience as an SEO Manager, Links and Content can be outsourced very cheaply overseas provided you know what you are doing, and by that I mean have built up your own portfolio of linkbait, highly authoritive links pages, directories and microsites, not read a few blog posts and claim to know what is and isn’t good SEO.
